  • In a Rush? Best Places to Stay in Fukuoka Overview

If you don’t have time to read the full guide, you can use this quick overview of our top pick for staying in Fukuoka:

    1. Hakata-Ku

Best for first-time visitors to Fukuoka

    Why Stay in Hakata-Ku?

Often referred to as just Hakata, this area makes up the city centre of Fukuoka. As such, it’s the best place to stay if you’re visiting for the first time, as you’ll be close to the main historical sites, as well as plenty of amenities.

Some of the top attractions in this area include the Sumiyoshi Shrine, the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, the Kushida Shrine, and the Hakata Machiya Folk Museum. However, there’s plenty more on offer too!

You’ll also find Hakata Station in this area, one of the biggest stations in all of Japan. This makes the area very accessible for those travelling into the city. Not to mention, this area is known for its huge department stores.

Another great reason to stay in this area is the food, as there are tons of fantastic stalls and restaurants found here. This way, you’ll be able to try a variety of local dishes!

Downside: As you’ll be staying right in the main tourist area of the city, you won’t have that authentic Japanese experience. Hakata can also get very busy!

    Where to Stay in Hakata-Ku?

As Hakata is right in the centre of the city, you won’t be short of hotel options. There are tons of fantastic properties to choose from, ranging from affordable 3* hotels to luxurious 5* stays, so there’s something for everyone. Here are our recommendations for the area:

Hotel – Nest Hotel Hakata Station (3*)

Just a short walk from Fujita Park, you’ll find Nest Hotel Hakata Station. The rooms here are affordable and the property offers plenty of facilities. These include an on-site restaurant, 24-hour front desk, laundry facilities, and room service. During your stay, you’ll also have free WiFi and a buffet breakfast is available. You’ll be in a great location for exploring Fukuoka too.

Hotel – Hotel Wing International Hakata Shinkansenguchi (3*)

This gorgeous hotel is a great option for single travellers and couples as their rooms sleep 1-2 people. Each room also features a TV, a private bathroom, free WiFi, and air conditioning. Although Hotel Wing International Hakata Shinkansenguchi has only been open since 2017, it’s become very popular. A highlight of staying here has to be the charming library lounge!

Hotel – THE BLOSSOM HAKATA Premier (4*)

One of the most luxurious hotels in this area is THE BLOSSOM HAKATA Premier. Although the rooms are pricey, they are spacious and modern. Not to mention they feature plenty of amenities including a small safety deposit box. This hotel also has awesome facilities, including an on-site restaurant and sauna. If you stay here, you’ll be close to Kushida Shrine and Sugawara Shrine too.

Hotel – Mitsui Garden Hotel Fukuoka Gion (4*)

Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful hotels in Fukuoka. Boasting charming decor, cosy rooms, an on-site Onsen, and a fantastic location, Mitsui Garden Hotel Fukuoka Gion has a lot to offer. First of all, Fujita Park and Kushida Shrine are both within walking distance. There’s also a 24-hour front desk where staff speak both English and Japanese. If you’re exploring Japan by car you’ll benefit from private parking too.

    2. Tenjin

Best for shopaholics and those looking for entertainment

    Why Stay in Tenjin?

Next up is Tenjin, another of the best places to stay in Fukuoka. Like Hakata-Ku, it’s very popular with first-time travellers, and there are some fantastic accommodation options, no matter your budget.

However, Tenjin is most famous for being the city’s main shopping destination. Here, you’ll find endless shopping opportunities, as the area is home to large department stores, boutiques, high-end fashion shops, and smaller, more unique stores.

If you’re a keen shopper, then a highlight has to be the Tenjin Underground Shopping Centre. It’s the largest underground shopping area in Kyushu and is famous for its huge variety of shops and restaurants.

Tenjin is also known for its entertainment, as you’ll find some fantastic bars and clubs in this part of Fukuoka. Not to mention, there are some great attractions nearby, including the Kego Shrine, Tenjin Central Park, and the Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art.

Not only is there plenty to do in Tenjin itself, but you’ll be staying in a very central location. As such, you’ll have no problems exploring the rest of the city, especially the nearby areas of Daimyo and Nakasu.

Downside: The majority of accommodation options in Tenjin are huge hotels, so if you’d prefer to stay somewhere more traditional, you may want to base yourself elsewhere.

    Where to Stay in Tenjin?

Although Tenjin covers a much smaller area than Hakata, there are still some fantastic options available. Many of these are very affordable, while some offer a more luxurious experience. Here are our recommendations for the area:

Hotel – HOTEL MYSTAYS Fukuoka Tenjin (3*)

HOTEL MYSTAYS Fukuoka Tenjin is one of the most low-cost properties you’ll find in this area. Double rooms are extremely affordable, especially as they feature a private bathroom, free WiFi, a TV, and air conditioning. In terms of facilities, there’s an on-site restaurant, laundrette, and drink vending machines. Breakfast is available at this hotel too, and you’ll be just a 3-minute walk from Tenjin Subway Station.

Hotel – Hotel Oriental Express Fukuoka Tenjin (3*)

Hotel Oriental Express Fukuoka Tenjin is another popular option in this area. The majority of rooms sleep 1-2 people, with a child staying free. You’ll also be just a short walk from Nagahama Park, making this place a great option for families. Continental breakfast can be enjoyed at the property and you’ll also have free WiFi. Not to mention, you’ll be near Tenjin Subway Station.

    Hotel – QuintessaHotel FukuokaTenjin Comic&Books (4*)

One of the most popular options in the neighbourhood, QuintessaHotel FukuokaTenjin has a lot to offer. With an on-site restaurant, laundry facilities, free WiFi, and a 24-hour front desk, you get a lot for your money. A breakfast buffet is also available every morning and serves both Asian and American options. If you stay here, you’ll be in a convenient location to explore Fukuoka.

Hotel – Solaria Nishitetsu Hotel Fukuoka (4*)

Offering direct access to Tenjin Subway Station, Solaria Nishitetsu Hotel Fukuoka is a fantastic option. You’ll have no problems getting around the city and Fukuoka Airport is just a 15-minute drive away too. Although the rooms are pricey, they are spacious and come with plenty of amenities, including a coffee machine, wardrobe, and safety deposit box. What more could you ask for?

    3. Nakasu

    Best for nightlife and parties

    Why Stay in Nakasu?

If you’re looking for nightlife in Fukuoka, then Nakasu is the place for you. It’s a small island, neighbouring the area of Tenjin so you can easily explore this part of the city too (it’s accessible via bridges).

Nakasu is famous for its vibrant and dynamic nightlife, with this area really coming alive in the evening. Here, you can find an array of lively nightclubs, karaoke bars, bustling izakayas, and gaming arcades.

Nakasu is also a top foodie location, with tons of restaurants being found in this part of Fukuoka. Better yet, this area is a great place to experience the Yatai (street food stalls), as there are endless options here, so make sure you try some local dishes.

In terms of attractions, there’s not too much to do on the island itself aside from visiting Seiryu Park and enjoying the nightlife of course.

However, this area is well-connected, so you’ll be within walking distance of endless attractions. These include the Kushida Shrine, Tenjin Central Park, the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, and Canal City Hakata (a huge shopping complex).

Downside: Hotel rooms tend to be more pricey in this area and it can get very loud at night. This won’t bother partygoers, but it’s not so suitable for families with children.

    Where to Stay in Nakasu?

Even though Nakasu is small, there are plenty of great accommodation options. Just be aware that some of the hotels in this area have lower ratings. That doesn’t mean they’re not a great place to stay, but you’ll just want to check the reviews before booking.

Here are my recommendations for the area:

Hotel – THE LIVELY FUKUOKA HAKATA (3*)

One of the best hotels in Fukuoka, THE LIVELY is a great base for your stay in Nakasu. There are a variety of rooms available and each one is cosy, offers a private bathroom, and features plenty of amenities. At the hotel, you’ll find a restaurant serving international cuisine and there are some great common areas, including the Lobby Lounge and workspace area.

Hotel – Mitsui Garden Hotel Fukuoka Nakasu (4*)

Another popular option in this area is Mitsui Garden Hotel Fukuoka Nakasu. A highlight of staying here is the location, as you’ll be near several attractions. These include the Kagami Tenmangu Shrine, Nakajima Park, and Okihamainari Shrine. Many of the rooms at this hotel also offer city views and a bath. If you stay here, you’ll benefit from free WiFi and private parking.

Hotel – The Royal Park Canvas Fukuoka Nakasu (4*)

When it comes to facilities, The Royal Park Canvas Fukuoka Nakasu is undoubtedly one of the best options in this area. It boasts an on-site restaurant, bar, sauna, and shared lounge, along with an outdoor terrace area. If money isn’t an issue, go for a sky floor room as you’ll be treated to epic city views too. Not to mention a buffet breakfast is available daily.

Hotel – Hotel Resol Trinity Hakata (4*)

Hotel Resol Trinity Hakata is within a 10-minute walk of two subway stations so getting around Fukuoka will be effortless. At this hotel, you can enjoy a salon spa, a restaurant and bar, laundry facilities, and a public bath which is found on the top floor. From this Onsen, you’ll get striking views of the city. There are also plenty of rooms to choose from!

    4. Daimyo

Best for those after a vibrant atmosphere and trendy neighbourhood

    Why Stay in Daimyo?

Set next to the popular area of Tenjin, you’ll find the trendy Daimyo. Known as the city’s unofficial fashion capital, expect to find plenty of unique shopping opportunities here, ranging from boutiques to vintage stores.

However, it’s not just the shopping that draws people to this area. First of all, Daimyo offers some unique eateries, including chic cafes and international chains. Popular options include U.S. Burger, Tontonton, Ceylon, and El Borracho.

This neighbourhood is known for its fascinating architecture too. Not only that, but it offers an awesome atmosphere and is a great place to people-watch. Honestly, this place just oozes flair and style, so is very popular with youngsters.

Thanks to the area’s location, you’ll also have easy access to all of Tenjin’s attractions. These include the Tenjin Underground Shopping Centre, Kego Shrine, Tenjin Central Park, and the Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art.

With an abundance of fantastic hotels too, Daimyo really does have something for every traveller. This makes it a great base for any trip to the city of Fukuoka!

Downside: As Daimyo is a more stylish area, you can expect large hotels and more modern amenities, so you won’t have an authentic experience in this part of the city.

    Where to Stay in Daimyo?

You’ll find plenty of options when it comes to hotels in Daimyo, many of which have fantastic ratings too. No matter whether you’re after a budget pick or a more luxurious option, there’s something for everyone in this part of Fukuoka.

Here are my recommendations for the area:

Hotel – LAMP LIGHT BOOKS HOTEL Fukuoka (3*)

LAMP LIGHT BOOKS HOTEL Fukuoka is one of the most popular options in Daimyo. On-site, there’s a charming book cafe and breakfast is available at the property. If you stay here, you’ll also have use of free bikes to explore the city. The rooms at this hotel are modern and spacious, and feature a private bathroom with a bath. You’ll have free WiFi too.

Hotel – Nishitetsu Grand Hotel (4*)

Just a short walk from Tenjin Station, you’ll find Nishitetsu Grand Hotel. This incredible hotel offers multiple dining options, a bakery that sells delicious pastries, and a bar. Massage treatments can also be requested and there’s a concierge service. You’ll be in a great location too, with the entertainment district of Nakasu being within walking distance. What else could you need?

Hotel – Hotel Monterey La Soeur Fukuoka (4*)

Hotel Monterey La Soeur Fukuoka offers stunning rooms, featuring gentle colours and dark wood. Each is also equipped with a private bathroom with a bath, tea maker, fridge, and air purifier/humidifier. As well as having an on-site restaurant, this hotel offers massage services, free WiFi, and private parking. Breakfast is also available here and Kushida Shrine is within walking distance.

    5. Momochihama

Best for family-friendly activities and outdoor spaces

    Why Stay in Momochihama?

If you’re travelling as a family with children then Momochihama is the perfect base. It makes up part of the Seaside Momochi area and is located right along the beach.

The great thing about staying here is that there’s plenty to do as a family. The Momochi Seaside Park is certainly a highlight as it offers lots of space for children to play and a man-made beach.

Other popular attractions in this area include the promenade, Fukuoka City Museum, Momochi Central Park, and Fukuoka Tower. In terms of the latter, from the observation deck, you’ll be treated to panoramic sea views. There are even VR binoculars available.

You’ll also find some great local restaurants in Momochihama, as well as international chains such as McDonalds, to cater for the little ones.

If you choose this area as a base, then you’re sure to have a relaxing getaway. After exploring the city, you can spend time on the beach and soak up the sun. As such, Momochihama offers a bit of everything.

Downside: Accommodation options are limited and book up fast. You’ll also be staying quite far out from the heart of Fukuoka (the areas of Hakata-Ku and Tenjin).

    Where to Stay in Momochihama?

Although Momochihama is a great place to stay, unfortunately, there aren’t many accommodation options in this area. As such, you’ll need to book in advance to secure a room or choose somewhere in a neighbouring area that still offers easy access.

Here are my recommendations for the area:

Hotel – Seaside Hotel Twins Momochi (3*)

Although one of the lower-rated options in this area, Seaside Hotel Twins Momochi offers some very affordable rooms. It’s just a short walk from Fukuoka Tower and Fukuoka PayPay Dome, so there are plenty of attractions nearby too. A buffet breakfast is available every day and there are a few restaurants within walking distance. You’ll also have free WiFi.

Hotel – The Residential Suites Fukuoka (3*)

Undoubtedly the most popular option, The Residential Suites Fukuoka has so much to offer. Boasting an outdoor swimming pool, indoor pool, restaurant, and fitness centre, the facilities at this place are top-notch. Bicycle rentals are also available at the property and there are drinks vending machines on-site. If you’re still not convinced, this hotel has a 24-hour front desk too.

Hotel – Hilton Fukuoka Sea Hawk (4*)

Although not in Momochihama, this hotel is just a very short walk away. As Hilton Fukuoka Sea Hawk overlooks Hakata Bay, some of the suites offer breathtaking bay views. This place also boasts an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, fitness centre, and spa, which features a sauna and hot tub. Not to mention, there are several dining options on-site.

Conclusion – Where to Stay in Fukuoka

As Fukuoka is such a huge city, there are so many great places to base yourself. You also won’t be short of options when it comes to accommodation, no matter whether you’re looking for a luxurious stay or something more affordable.

Hopefully, this guide has given you a good idea of where to stay in Fukuoka. You might have even spotted a hotel or two in here that you like, and that will save you scouring the internet for other options.

If you’ve already got an idea of where you’d like to stay, it’s time to start planning your trip to Fukuoka!
